Paul Leamy is programme chair and lecturer on the B.Sc. (hons) in Furniture and Wood Technology in GMIT Letterfrack. He also lectures on the B.Sc. (hons) in Furniture Design and Manufacture and B.Sc. (hons) in Education (Design, Graphics and Construction). Paul has considerable first-hand experience in a broad range of skills in the design and production of furniture and furniture components and also in the design and manufacture of high end bespoke furniture. Paul graduated from the National Certificate in Furniture Design and Manufacture course in Letterfrack and went to work in a specialist bespoke workshop in the UK. He returned to complete the two-year add-on B.Sc. degree in Furniture Technology and graduated with first class honours. In 2010 he completed his M.Sc. through research.
Paul commenced educating in GMIT Letterfrack in 1999 and has taught on a significant and varied number of modules since. Paul has contributed to the running and development of the suite of programmes on offer and constantly looks to future market trends to introduce new and advanced techniques into his teaching. This ensures students are exposed to best practice and are therefore prepared to be leaders in their discipline when they graduate.
Due to the highly practical nature of the educational experience in GMIT Letterfrack, Paul teaches by example, by also making the pieces with the students. If the students are making a dining chair or dovetail jewellery box, Paul makes one also. Students respond very positively to seeing in real time the advanced and complicated techniques being applied. Whether it’s an intricate marquetry piece, bespoke inlays, hand cut dovetails, highly technical computer based programming and processing, sophisticated finishing procedures and more, Paul has the advanced skills required to teach and produce exceptional complete works. His belief is that this demonstrates to the students the level which is required of their work. This requires a significant investment of time outside of class time to complete each piece, however, students respond energetically and favourably to the finished outcomes and appreciate having a bench mark of quality to aim towards as their learning advances.
Paul has significant industry contacts and organises regular student field trips to visit such companies. He is constantly seeking to advance the facilities and equipment available to students in GMIT Letterfrack. He has specified and arranged the purchase of equipment for new spraying facilities for wood finishing, an engineering workshop, upholstery studio, photography studio as well as many more focused items of woodworking machinery and equipment. Over the years Paul has organised conferences, seminars, guest lecturers, tool and equipment demonstrations and has contributed to many other projects which have been varying in nature. Paul demands excellence of himself in his work and strives to have all his students attain excellence in their work and work practices.
